A Little Flooding... (Our "Lake Home") :-/

A few weeks ago we had a pretty heavy rain, after already having several previous days of constant rain. I love the rain, but when we get a lot of it really fast, the drain in front of our house has trouble keeping up. Our house is lower than our neighbors', & when all of this rain happens & the water backs up, our home starts to become a 'lake home'...but not in a good day. Here's a pic of the water creeping up our yard, as a vehicle drives through. The cars that come by will stop & watch the person in front of them to see if they make it through the water to get through the other side. Then either the next car gives it a try, or they'll turn around & try something else.


Here's Dave in front of our house clearing out the drain. As the water comes in it brings sticks & other junk that block the drain. If we can keep the drain clear the rain water will drain easier & the water won't creap up to our house as much.

A few years ago this happened & the water got so high, so fast that we couldn't make it out to the drain. (While Dave was out clearing the drain some jerk in his big 'manly' truck plowed through the water without slowing down at all & created a wake that came clear up to the house & also soaked Dave! We were NOT happy about that)! As it rained, the water came clear up to the front porch & was flowing around the house through the back yard! Our basement leaked a LOT, mostly through the window wells which resulted in a good 2 inches of water in our whole basement. Luckily the drain in our floor next to the washer was open & working so all of the water drained away pretty quickly. The whole ordeal from the heavy down poor to the water draining from the basement was less than an hour! It was still very frightening, but luckily the damage was very minimal. Now, when it rains really hard, it makes me nervous & I haven't been able to enjoy it like I used to. :-/

My fingers are crossed that we won't have to deal with that again! :-(
